Case Study - Design
The goal of the project was to improve device segregation and packing during sterilization, which entailed packing as many devices as possible for production. To achieve this, PIE Solutions was involved in the overall process and designed a novel device packing assembly. Material constraints and the number of assemblies (14,000) dictated that a high volume manufacturing process would be used.
Benefits of the PIE Solution designed packing assembly:
- Made in the USA (including all the components)
- More than 10 times cheaper than other competitors' solutions
- Packs 2 times more devices than the previous configuration
- Soft-touch textured finish on plastic
- Simulation-tested against rough handling and falls
- Ergonomic features and premium materials (stainless steel and HDPE)
- The ability to pack extra devices for sterilization has enabled the PIE Solutions Customer to annually cost-avoid 500,000$.
Case Study - Build
PIE Solutions has also been tasked with building pallet cages. Upon receiving this order, PIE Solutions reviewed design for manufacturing. Using our checklist, we provided suggestions to reduce assembly costs and simplify the build.
Benefits of the PIE Solution designed/built cages:
- Provided input to reduce the build time of the assembly by 55%
- Updated various fastening methods, which reduced the Bill of Materials cost by an additional 15%
- Managed the supply chain, which reduced raw component cost by an additional 30%
- In addition to the final inspection, quality was checked in groups at the subassembly level, ensuring the utmost quality
- In the end, after PIE solutions performed the build, they achieved a cost reduction of over 50% for this large build project (raw materials and labor).
